Trends Suggest That Soon All Smartphones Will Be The Same

When you look at the world of cars, you do not often see the same type of engine repeated across different manufacturers. Enter a used-car lot, and you see a wide variety of branded cars with very different engines in each. Yet in the world of mobile-Smartphone technology we are seeing more and more of the same build and same components.

Where it all began

Apple was the first to create a successful Smartphone, and at the time they held a monopoly on the technology. Now, the marketplace is full of manufacturers with their own technology, or so it would seem; in reality, more and more Smartphones contain very similar builds.

The race for Smartphone specs

Review writers are noticing more and more that Smartphones have very similar builds. The biggest difference these days is raw specs. One Smartphone brings out a phone with an 8mp camera, so another brings one out with a 13mp camera. One has four processors, so another has eight.

Take a cross-section of phones these days, open them up, and you will find processors made by the same company, the same graphics chips, the same storage technology, and this is a trend that is becoming more and more prevalent.

Look at the world of video gaming

The Xbox One and Playstation 4 have so many similarities in build and design that if you strip away the minor differences and their programming, then you have the same device. This is happening in the world of Smartphones, and the ones that do not comply are being pushed to the side.

Goodbye Nokia and Blackberry

Companies that try it differently, such as Blackberry are buried. Even Microsoft has scrapped its plans for future releases of Nokia phones because they deviate ever so slightly from the “standard” Smartphone build. Microsoft is concentrating on their Windows phones, and just like the Apple devices and Android devices, they feature many similar components.

There have been no new big hitters in the technology world that suggests a more varied future. Phone manufacturers are using similar (or the same) parts as their completion because if they do not, then they risk losing their market share.

Soon, the only difference will be software

If the trend towards using the same components and build continues, then the only difference we will see is in software. The Smartphone world will soon mirror the gaming world, where new ideas such as motion controls are squashed in place of keeping with the status quo of current technology.

This doesn’t mean that future Smartphones will not have better batteries, more processors, better storage, longer talk-time etc.; it just means that if one suddenly acquires technology to improve their phone, then soon the rest of the market will follow with the same.

Open up your phone and open up your friends; phones, and you will see names such as NVIDIA, QUALCOMM, and TI, and many others mirrored across the different brands. This is a trend that will continue until another company changes the game like Apple did back in the day. Until then, we will continue to see the same components in phones again and again until they are all built (almost) the same way.
