Recommendations and Suggestions: Buying a Tablet in 2014

You must have read many articles about what to buy, different tablets’ specifications and prices and what not. But in going after specifications of a particular brand, you may have overlooked its suitability for you. For example, what good is an iPad if it doesn’t suit you and a cheap Chinese tablet does? – Many people fall into the branding trap and don’t consider the things that make a tablet a good purchase.

Tablet Buying Guide

In this article we will discuss things to consider before buying a tablet, regardless of brands.

Always keep in mind why you are buying a tablet

Purchasing a tablet can become a lot easier if you realize what it that you want a tablet for is. Do you want to substitute your laptop? Do you intend to do serious work? If yes then you should go for solid devices with high specs (and high price) of course. Do you want to use it for gaming or apps? Then don’t buy Apple’s devices because their gaming is not quite up to the mark. Do you want to use it for multimedia? As in watching movies, using Facebook. Twitter, taking it outdoors, then any tablet even Chinese ones with good screens would do.

Keep the pricing factor in consideration

This point goes without saying. You would naturally buy something within your range but sometimes people go overboard and buy a very expensive tablet, something that they don’t even need. There is no doubt that an expensive looking, reputable brand looks amazing and makes a strong fashion and usage statement but what is the point of spending money on something you know you would never need. The key in spending wisely is to pay for something that you will use, not something that has features but is useless for you.

Manufacturer

Manufacturer cannot be ignored and shouldn’t be ignored. Every brand of tablet has its positives and negatives – Its own weaknesses and strengths. For example Nexus is sturdy while Acer and iPad are not. If you are looking for a tablet for rough usage, you may want to buy a sturdy tablet.
Apart from each manufacturer has its own merit, its own special features. For example let’s take the pricing front: Amazon gives you Kindle at very affordable rates, it is a solid tablet but Apple is expensive and has more features. Now you must decide if you need Apple’s features or Amazon’s would do.

Size

When speaking about the optics, two things matter the most: screen quality and more than that size of the tablet. Not long ago, 8.7inch tablets were the common norm but by paying a little extra you can get 10.1 inch tablets. A personal recommendation is that always look to by 10.1 inch tablet.

Android, Windows or iOS

There are three leading operating systems in the world: Android, Windows and iOS. Android is the wild horse, open source software with near endless capacity for innovation and variety. Windows is arguably the most secure platform in the world, it also slight expensive. iOS, Apple’s OS is a solid platform but has limited capacity in terms of apps. So again, you have to decide which one you need most and what will suit you most.
